Sunset House Sardinia News - La mattanza - tuna fishing

Among Sardinia’s most iconic maritime traditions is la mattanza , the ceremonial and communal tuna fishing that has shaped coastal communities for centuries. Particularly practiced in towns such as Portoscuso , Sant’Antioco , and Carloforte , la mattanza is more than an economic activity—it is a ritual that blends skill, courage, community, and a deep respect for the sea. For visitors, witnessing or learning about la mattanza offers a window into Sardinia’s maritime heritage and the rhythms of life along its coast. Want to see more? However, the tradition’s origins are far older than the term suggests. Archaeological evidence and historical accounts indicate that tuna fishing along the Sardinian coasts dates back to Phoenician and Punic times , when the Mediterranean’s abund...

Sunset House Sardinia News: Porto Flavia - a masterpiece of engineering

Along the rugged southwestern coast of Sardinia lies Porto Flavia , a testament to human ingenuity and industrial innovation. Unlike the picturesque beaches and ancient ruins that characterize much of the island, Porto Flavia stands out as a monument to early 20th-century engineering, designed to revolutionize the transport of mineral resources. Built to serve the rich iron mines of the Sulcis-Iglesiente region, Porto Flavia represents a fascinating intersection of technology, economics, and Sardinian industrial heritage. Want to see more? Check us out clicking  here  and discover  Sunset House Sardinia ! In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Sardinia became an important center for iron mining. The Sulcis-Iglesiente area, particularly near Iglesias and Portoscuso , was rich in iron ore deposits, which were in high demand due to industrialization across Europe. However, transporting ore from inland mines to ships was inefficient and costly, often involving lo...

Sunset House Sardinia News - Three days to enjoy!

Welcome to one of the most celebrated weeks of spring! In Sardinia, this week is actually even more festive than in the rest of Italy, as we celebrate some dates that are closely connected to our own history. Here’s what it’s all about: Want to see more? Check us out clicking  here  and discover  Sunset House Sardinia ! April 25th is the day that commemorates Italy’s liberation from the Fascist regime in 1945. On that day, the partisans managed to liberate Milan (although some areas were still under Fascist control, it was limited and no longer decisive). Mussolini was forced to flee the city, but he was captured near the Swiss border, disguised as a partisan, and was immediately executed. It is a very important day in Italian history. April 28th , besides being the day of Mussolini’s execution, is also Sardinia’s official holiday, called Sa Die de sa Sardigna (Sardinia Day). It is a symbolic occasion to reflect on the history that particularly concerns our region — ...

Sunset House Sardinia News - Spring in Sardinia? Why not?

Spring, for Sardinians, is a kind of door to the beach — an official one, at least. There are years when we go to the beach (to sunbathe and swim, not just to walk or fish!) from the last days of February, but March, well… March is the month when many of us start enjoying the warmth of spring. Want to see more? Check us out clicking  here  and discover  Sunset House Sardinia ! Temperatures often stay above 20°C, even though in Italian we say, “Marzo pazzerello, anche col sole prendi l’ombrello” (“Crazy March: even when the sun shines, take an umbrella”). Still, we can definitely say that the weather is generally warm and pleasant. Our beaches are still perfectly empty — maybe a bit cold, especially the water — but warm when the sun shines, and we can finally take off our T-shirts and enjoy all that beauty on our skin. It is always recommended to put on some sunscreen, though, as we need to get used to the sun again after winter, and, as you know, the sun can always be ...

Sunset House Sardinia News - How does Sardinia feel?

Many tourists are currently wondering whether, after Typhoon Harry , Sardinia is alright or if the damage caused by the strong winds could somehow compromise their future holidays. The answer is NO: your holidays are safe and sound ! First of all, speaking about our area, located on the south-western coast of the island, the damage was actually minimal. It definitely rained more than usual, causing some unusual temperatures (7 degrees in winter is cold for us!) and unusually high water levels in our dams (Tratalias and Iglesias). Luckily for us, the typhoon came from Sicily — that is to say, from the south-west — therefore we, on the western coast, were in one of the safest areas of Sardinia. Want to see more? Check us out clicking here and discover Sunset House Sardinia ! The main problems affected the eastern coast, from Villasimius to Costa Smeralda . That part of the island suffered some damage (a pier in the tourist port of Marina Piccola in Cagliari literally collapsed!) becau...
