Nature and views
Capo Altano Cycle Path (0 km, 0 minutes)
Leaving our village, you can turn right and start the “Capo Altano Cycle Path,” a cycling and pedestrian route that winds through Mediterranean scrub and stretches along the Capo Altano coast, offering unique views and scents typical of the Mediterranean landscapes. The path is perfect for jogging, cycling, or simply enjoying a morning walk.
Santa Barbara Mining Trail (0 km, 0 minutes)
The Santa Barbara Mining Trail is a cycling and pedestrian route stretching for about 500 km in Southwest Sardinia, discovering all the mining sites of Sulcis and Iglesiente. The first part of the Capo Altano cycle path is also part of one of the stages of the Santa Barbara Trail — the one from Portoscuso to Bacu Abis. This stage is about 19 km long, considered suitable for experienced hikers, but anyone can attempt it and discover other natural and archaeological beauties surrounding the Sunset House area.
Is Zuddas Caves (49 km, 47 minutes by car)
One of the karst cave complexes in our area, a natural phenomenon of stunning beauty, lies less than an hour from our home. The caves, fully accessible, date back about 530 million years and are still changing today, shaped by the slow but relentless action of water flowing through them.
San Giovanni Caves (39 km, 34 minutes by car)
The San Giovanni caves, in Domusnovas, offer the experience of entering the longest drive-through cave in the world. Dating back around 530 million years, like the nearby Is Zuddas caves, they can even be explored by bicycle thanks to their extraordinary size.
Grotta Azzurra (accessible only by sea)
In front of Masua, near Pan di Zucchero, hides one of the wonders of our coast. Also called “Sardinia Cave” because its shape, when seen from the right angle, reflects the perfect outline of Sardinia thanks to its rock formations and underwater reflections. The cave is only reachable by sea — you can rent a dinghy, canoe, or even a pedal boat from nearby Masua beach.
Pan di Zucchero (28 km – 40 minutes by car)
In front of Masua beach, but visible already just a few kilometres after leaving Portoscuso, Pan di Zucchero rises majestically from the waters of western Sardinia. The highest sea stack in Europe (133 metres tall!) is not only famous for its enchanting beauty, but is also a destination for climbers from all over the continent who love to challenge its sheer cliffs, surrounded by nature, light, and vibrant colours.
Le Colonne (52 km, 1h 43 minutes by car and ferry)
One of the most famous natural wonders of the area is located on the beautiful island of San Pietro, visible every day from the Sunset House terrace. Once an imposing natural monument, Le Colonne have been greatly eroded by the sea and wind over the decades, breaking apart and definitely reducing their height. Still, it’s worth visiting for the stunning natural surroundings.
Nebida Scenic Road (23 km, 26 minutes by car)
One of the most famous panoramic roads in all Sardinia lies just behind Capo Altano. You can drive it in the morning, afternoon, or evening — the view will always be breathtaking, with cliffs overhanging the sea, the rock stacks and the majestic Pan di Zucchero.
